On This Day in Science History - October 13 - Margaret Thatcher

October 13th is Margaret Thatcher's birthday. Most people know her as the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, serving from 1979 to 1990. Fewer know she was initially a chemist. She worked with Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgekin, winner of the 1964 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and as a research chemist for British Xylonite Plastics. Her last chemistry position was with J. Lyons and Co working on ice cream preservatives.

She left chemistry to become a barrister and began her political career as a Member of Parliament. Find out what else occurred on this day in science history.
